Barrow in Furness, UK

Client: DONG Energy West of Duddon Sands UK Ltd

Date: 2013

Project: Design construct and install 3 no. pontoon mooring units for the use of Crew Transfer Vessels for Dong Energy’s West of Duddon Sands Windfarm. The site is, especially at high tides, very exposed, with waves up to 2 meters high and a tidal range of 11 meters.

Due to site restrictions, some of the piles (120 cm diameter) needed to be placed inside the pontoons rather than between the pontoons and the quay wall. In addition to this several large cabinets for fuel, waste water, electricity, water and emergencies were placed on the pontoons. The pontoons have been carefully designed to compensate for the extra weight of these items. Adaptable floatation tubes have been installed to be able to compensate any changes in weight distribution.

Production of the pontoon units was 5oo meters from the installation site inside the Barrow in Furness port basin.

Scope: 68m long x 5m wide x 1,10m freeboard pontoon berthing facility, comprising 3 bespoke pontoons with internal pile guides of l 22.50 x w 5.00 x h 2.00 weight 85.000 kgs each
